Agents

Create an agent

1. Describe the work

On Agents, click New agent and write what the agent should do, as you would explain it to a new teammate. Say what starts the work, what to check, and when to ask you. For example:

When a supplier emails an invoice, check it against the purchase order and delivery note, flag differences, and ask me to approve before it goes to accounts.

If you already have the procedure written down, click Attach a procedure and add it. Then click Set it up.

Automette shows the agent as it sets it up: its role, its steps, the tools they need, and what starts it. If something essential is missing, such as which template to use, it lists it under Still needed. Nothing is made until you click Create this agent, which then opens Run a task so you can try it straight away.

To set everything up yourself instead, click Start blank.

2. Check the steps

Steps shows the agent as a diagram: Role and behaviour on top, its brief, then the steps. Click either to open it beside the diagram.

  • For a step AI should do, check the Instructions and Tools to use.
  • For a step that must run the same way every time, open More options, turn AI does this step off, choose the Tool, and fill in its settings. Values from earlier steps are chosen from a list.

A fixed step stops the task if it fails. To do something else instead, such as writing the error somewhere, click ⋯ on the step in the diagram, then Add "If it fails", and add the steps to run on that path. In a step done by AI, say what to do about a failure in its instructions.

To add a step, click + in the diagram. Besides AI steps and fixed steps, you can add paths, loops, branches that run at the same time, another agent, approvals and waits. See Paths, loops and failures.

3. Check its tools

Open Tools. The agent can use only the tools switched on here. Click a tool to set values it should always use, for example the checks for Extract data or the template for Generate document.

4. Choose what starts it

Open Run when and pick a trigger under Also start it, such as Form submitted or Google Sheets row. You can always start a task by hand, from the API, or by emailing the agent's own address, shown at the top of the page.

Under the agent's email address, Who can email it decides whose emails start a task: People in your team (the default), Your team and the senders below (addresses, or domains such as acme.com), or Anyone. Email from anyone else is ignored. Click Change to choose a different address; the old one stops working at once.

5. Test the draft

Click Run a task in the agent's menu, turn on Run the draft, give it a message and any files, and watch the task. Test tasks are marked Test run and do not appear with the agent's real tasks.

6. Save a version

Your changes save as you make them, but tasks run the agent's active version. Click Save version, and give it a name if you like. From then on, tasks run the new version; tasks already running finish on the one they started with.

Set it up from a task

If you have already done the work once with the Assistant, click Set it up under Set this up to run again at the end of that task, or Set up to run again at the top of the task. Automette shows the agent it would make and its steps. To change something, type it and click Update. Nothing is made until you click Create.
